Eligibility
To be eligible for a Permanent Resident Card in Mexico, you generally need to meet one of the following criteria:
- Have close family ties to a Mexican citizen or permanent resident.
- Apply through a regularization program (for those already in Mexico without proper documentation).
- Meet the financial solvency requirements (having sufficient income or savings).
- Retirees with sufficient funds to support themselves.
- Gain the status through a Temporary Resident Card after four years.
- Other specific scenarios, such as humanitarian grounds or specialized work.
Financial Requirements
As of the latest update, the financial requirements include:
- Monthly income: Typically around 500 times the minimum daily wage in Mexico City, which fluctuates. For example, if the minimum wage is 141.70 MXN per day, the monthly income requirement would be around 70,850 MXN.
- Savings: A certain amount of savings in your bank account for the past 12 months, often around 20,000 times the minimum daily wage.
Application Process
Step 1: Apply at a Mexican Consulate
- Locate the nearest Mexican Consulate: Check the official website for the Mexican consulate nearest to you.
- Schedule an appointment: Contact the consulate to book an appointment.
- Prepare your documents:
- Passport
- Proof of legal stay in the country where you apply (if applicable)
- Financial statements
- Passport-sized photos
- Proof of relationship (if applying through family ties)
- Any additional documents requested by the consulate
Step 2: Consulate Interview
- Attend your appointment with all required documents.
- The consulate will review your application and conduct an interview.
- If approved, you will receive a visa sticker in your passport.
Step 3: Enter Mexico
- Enter Mexico within the timeframe specified on your visa (usually six months).
- Inform the immigration officer at the port of entry that you are entering on a permanent resident visa.
Step 4: Visit the INM Office
- Within 30 days of your arrival in Mexico, visit the National Immigration Institute (INM) office.
