“Canje” Temporary or Permanent Residency Visa
Temporary Residency: Typically valid for one year and can be renewed for up to four years. Suitable for those staying more than six months but less than four years.
Permanent Residency: No need for renewal and suitable for those planning to live indefinitely in Mexico. Within 30 days of entering Mexico, you must exchange your visa for a resident card (temporal or permanent depending on your procedure) at the National Institute of Immigration (Instituto Nacional de Migración, INM)
A Temporary Resident Card in Mexico allows foreign nationals to reside in the country for more than 180 days and up to four years, with the possibility of renewal.

Requirements
- Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Mexico.
- Application Form: Completed visa application form.
- Photographs: Passport-sized photographs (often with specific requirements regarding size and background).
- Proof of Financial Stability: This can include bank statements, proof of employment, pension statements, or proof of real estate ownership in Mexico.
- Consular Appointment: An appointment at a Mexican consulate in your home country.
- Proof of Residency in Home Country: Documents showing your current residence.
- Visa Fee: Payment of the application fee, which varies by consulate.
Steps to Apply
- Schedule an Appointment: Contact the Mexican consulate in your home country to schedule an appointment for your visa application.
- Submit Documents: Attend the appointment and submit all required documents. Some consulates may conduct an interview.
- Visa Approval: If approved, the consulate will place a visa sticker in your passport.
- Enter Mexico: You must enter Mexico within 180 days of the visa being issued.
- Visit INM: Within 30 days of your arrival, you must visit the National Immigration Institute (Instituto Nacional de Migración, INM) in Mexico to exchange your visa sticker for a Temporary Resident Card. Financial Requirements
- Savings: A bank account balance equivalent to 20,000-25,000 USD over the last 12 months.
- Income: Monthly income of around 1,500-2,000 USD over the last six months.
- Property Ownership: Proof of property ownership in Mexico can sometimes suffice.
